Philodendron is a large Neotropical genus of climbing, crawling and self-heading (Meconostigma) aroids, ranging from small hemiepiphytic vines to trunked forest giants. Collector interest splits between climbing species valued for leaf shape and colour (bronze, near-black or blue-toned foliage) and named variegated cultivars that arose as chimeric sports of established species.
Care notes
Climbing species benefit from a moss pole or similar support: leaf size and shape mature more with something to climb than as an unsupported trailing plant.
Self-heading Meconostigma species (P. selloum, P. martianum) need significantly more floor space and light than climbers in the same size pot.
Named variegated cultivars are propagated by node, not seed; confirm a cutting includes stable variegated tissue, not an all-green reverted node.
Questions
Climbing (hemiepiphytic) species like P. melanochrysum send out a single growth point and aerial roots that attach to a support as they grow. Self-heading Meconostigma species like P. selloum grow multiple leaves from a central rosette without climbing, eventually forming a visible trunk.
Variegated cultivars are chimeras: variegation exists in only some of the plant's growth tissue. A cutting taken from a node without that tissue present grows as a plain-green (reverted) plant regardless of the parent's appearance.
Climbing species produce larger, more mature leaf shape when given something to climb; leaves on an unsupported, trailing plant of the same species are typically smaller and more juvenile in form.
It's a variegated cultivar of Philodendron erubescens, not a wild species: the pink sectoring is a stable but chimeric trait maintained through vegetative propagation, not seed.
