Before you buy
- Inspect the distinctive bristled petioles for signs of rot or physical damage, as these are highly susceptible to prolonged moisture.
- Check the undersides of the velvety leaves closely for spider mites, which frequently target this species in dry environments.
- Look for robust, firm aerial roots if the plant is already attached to a support pole, indicating good health and active growth.
- Confirm the new growth point is firm and green, avoiding any plants where the newest emerging leaf is yellowed or mushy.
About Philodendron verrucosum
Philodendron verrucosum is a hemiepiphytic aroid native to the wet tropical forests stretching from Costa Rica through to Peru. It has broad, heart-shaped leaves with a deep-green velvety texture and prominent pale venation. The species is identified by its densely bristled or scaly petioles. As a climbing aroid, it grows in warm, humid understory conditions, typically ascending trees in its natural habitat using aerial roots.

Philodendron verrucosum care
- Substrate
- A loose, well-draining aroid mix composed of orchid bark, perlite and coco coir replicates the aerated conditions of its natural wet forest habitat. Standard potting compost retains too much water and suffocates the root system.
- Watering
- Allow the top third of the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Overwatering quickly leads to root rot in this species, so checking moisture levels before adding water is critical.
- Humidity
- Maintain humidity above 70% to support the large velvety leaves and encourage strong aerial root growth on climbing poles. The velvety texture will degrade and leaf margins will crisp if the air is too dry.
- Feeding
- Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the active growing season. Reduce feeding to a monthly schedule during winter when growth naturally slows.
- Repotting
- Repot every 12 to 18 months or when roots begin growing out of the drainage holes. Provide a moss pole or similar support at the time of repotting to accommodate its hemiepiphytic climbing habit.
Common problems
Crisping or browning leaf edges
Cause: Ambient humidity dropping significantly below 70%, often exacerbated by indoor heating over winter
Fix: Move the plant away from direct heat sources and use a humidifier to maintain consistent moisture in the air
Root and stem rot
Cause: A dense substrate that stays persistently wet or leaving the pot sitting in a waterlogged saucer
Fix: Remove the plant from its pot, trim away any mushy roots, and repot into a coarser mix with better drainage
Spider mites
Cause: Warm, dry indoor conditions that allow pest populations to multiply rapidly on the textured foliage
Fix: Wipe the leaves regularly, increase ambient humidity, and apply a targeted treatment to the foliage and bristled petioles

How to propagate Philodendron verrucosum
- Methods
- Stem cutting, Air layering. Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Rewards a consistent watering and light routine, but tolerates the occasional lapse. Suited to growers with some houseplant experience.
- Time to establish
- 4-8 months
- True from cuttings
- Yes. Cuttings keep the cultivar's character.
- Notes
- Stem cuttings with at least one node and a pre-existing aerial root have the highest success rate. Root the cuttings in damp sphagnum moss or perlite within a closed propagation box to maintain high humidity. Ensure the bristled petiole remains above the rooting medium to prevent rot.
