Before you buy
- Check that roots are firm and pale to tan; avoid plants with black, slimy, or absent roots
- Given its eventual scale, confirm you have the floor space and a tall enough support before committing
- Inspect leaf undersides for pests, which are easy to overlook on very large foliage
- Compare leaf size and maturity to price — a young plant should be priced accordingly, not at the rate of a mature specimen
About Philodendron gigas
The name says it plainly: Philodendron gigas produces enormous, elongated, cordate leaves that can exceed a metre in length, deep velvety dark green in colour. Native to lowland rainforest in Panama, it climbs as a hemiepiphyte and needs consistent warmth, high humidity, and a genuinely sturdy support structure to anchor its aerial roots as it grows toward that mature size. Sheer leaf scale makes it one of the more prominent specimens a collection can hold.

Philodendron gigas care
- Substrate
- A high-porosity mix — 50% perlite, 30% orchid bark, 20% coco coir — with a substantial moss pole or totem set in at planting time, sized for the eventual scale of this species rather than a small starter pole.
- Watering
- Water thoroughly, then let the top third of the mix dry before watering again. A plant of this eventual size uses water increasingly fast as it matures, so expect watering frequency to increase over time.
- Humidity
- High, 60%+. Consistent warmth alongside humidity matters as much as the number itself for a species used to stable lowland rainforest conditions.
- Feeding
- Feed at quarter to half strength every 2-3 weeks in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser; drop to monthly over winter. Its eventual scale supports slightly heavier feeding than smaller philodendrons once established.
- Repotting
- Repot every 12-18 months into a pot and support sized for the eventual leaf length — this species outgrows an undersized setup quickly once mature.
Common problems
Leaves failing to reach full size
Cause: No climbing support, or a support too short for the plant's current growth
Fix: Add or extend a sturdy support; leaf size on this species tracks climbing height closely
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Toppling in an undersized pot
Cause: A large canopy outgrowing a pot too small or light to anchor it
Fix: Move up to a heavier, wider-based pot as the plant gains size

How to propagate Philodendron gigas
- Methods
- Stem cutting, Node cutting. Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Rewards a consistent watering and light routine, but tolerates the occasional lapse. Suited to growers with some houseplant experience.
- Time to establish
- 4-8 months
- True from cuttings
- Yes. Cuttings keep the cultivar's character.
- Notes
- Stem cuttings with at least one node and aerial root root readily in damp sphagnum or water within 3-6 weeks; given the leaf size involved, a sturdy support from the start makes a real difference to how quickly a cutting establishes.
