About Philodendron 'Painted Lady'

Philodendron 'Painted Lady' has a marbled pattern of lime-green and deep forest-green across its elongated, glossy leaves, with no two leaves showing quite the same distribution of light and dark tissue. The contrast becomes more pronounced as leaves mature and the darker green deepens further. It climbs steadily with support; the marbling pattern is unpredictable from leaf to leaf.

Before you buy

Check the marbling pattern in photos; no two leaves show the same distribution of light and dark green, so judge the specific specimen rather than a generic reference photo
This is a climbing hybrid; check for a healthy node and aerial root activity if buying a cutting
Confirm the seller's photos show genuine marbling contrast, not just uneven photo lighting
Ask whether the specimen offered is still young, since contrast between the light and dark tissue tends to deepen further as leaves mature

Philodendron 'Painted Lady' care

Substrate: A well-aerated aroid mix composed of bark, perlite and coco coir provides the necessary drainage while holding some moisture. Standard potting compost alone stays too wet and restricts oxygen around the root system.
Watering: Water the plant thoroughly, allowing the top third of the soil to dry completely before watering again. Ensure the pot has proper drainage holes so the roots do not sit in excess water.
Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity levels between 60-75% for steady growth and large leaf development. Average household humidity is often tolerated, but supplementing with a humidifier prevents the leaf margins from drying out.
Feeding: Feed every two weeks during the active growing season using a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding to once a month during the winter when growth naturally slows down.
Repotting: Repot every 12-18 months or when the roots begin circling the bottom of the container. Select a pot that is one size larger to avoid leaving too much damp substrate around the existing root system.

Common problems

Yellowing lower leaves
Cause: Overwatering or a poorly draining substrate that suffocates the root system
Fix: Allow the soil to dry out further between waterings and consider moving the plant to a chunkier, better-aerated potting mix
Loss of variegation
Cause: Insufficient light levels cause the plant to produce more chlorophyll to compensate
Fix: Relocate the plant to a position with bright, indirect light to encourage the production of the lighter lime-green tissue
Thrips
Cause: Dry indoor air allows these pests to multiply rapidly on the undersides of the foliage
Fix: Wipe the leaves regularly, increase the ambient humidity, and treat the infestation with a suitable contact or systemic insecticide

How to propagate Philodendron 'Painted Lady'

Methods: Stem cutting, Air layering. Step-by-step guide
Difficulty: Moderate. Rewards a consistent watering and light routine, but tolerates the occasional lapse. Suited to growers with some houseplant experience.
Time to establish: 3-6 months
Notes: Take stem cuttings that include at least one node and a visible aerial root for the highest success rate. Root the cuttings in damp sphagnum moss or perlite before transferring them to a standard potting mix. Ensure the cuttings are kept in high humidity and warm temperatures while new roots form.
