The name means 'distantly lobed,' and it's descriptive: Philodendron distantilobum's deeply pinnatisect leaves resemble a claw or a set of ribs, with narrow lobes spaced widely apart rather than the densely overlapping arrangement other lobed philodendrons show. Native to Amazonian rainforest in Brazil and Peru, it's a vigorous climber that attaches to supports using aerial roots, building a genuinely architectural silhouette at maturity. Easy to grow under standard tropical houseplant conditions once it has something to climb.
Amazonian Brazil to Peru
Less pronounced lobing on new leaves
Cause: No climbing support, or a young plant yet to reach mature leaf form
Fix: Add or extend a moss pole; the widely spaced lobing becomes more distinct with maturity and a proper support
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Brown leaf tips
Cause: Low humidity or minerals in UK tap water
Fix: Increase ambient humidity and switch to rainwater or filtered water
