Simple, entire juvenile leaves on Philodendron pedatum give little hint of what's coming: as the plant climbs into better light, mature foliage transitions into deeply lobed, pedate leaves with five to seven narrow lobes, a shape shift strong enough to make young and mature growth look almost unrelated. Native to rainforest across northern South America, it ascends tree trunks using aerial roots in warm, humid conditions. That narrow-lobed mature leaf shape is a recognisable identifying feature among vining aroids, and the reason collectors grow it on rather than leaving it small.

Leaves staying simple and undivided
Cause: A young or juvenile plant, or insufficient light to trigger the transition to mature, lobed foliage
Fix: Provide a climbing support and brighter indirect light; be patient, since the transition takes real height and time
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Leggy growth with long gaps between leaves
Cause: Insufficient light for a naturally vigorous climber
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light and provide a support to climb
