Very long, very narrow, pendent leaves hang strap-like from the climbing stem of Philodendron patriciae, unlike any other cultivated Philodendron — a shallow to open basal sinus and strongly reduced posterior lobes taper gradually to an elongated acuminate tip. Described by Croat from Colombia's humid montane and lowland forest, it ascends trees in warm, shaded understory where humidity stays consistently high, slender stems rooting at each node. The base species draws its own dedicated interest from collectors who specifically want the botanical species rather than a cultivated derivative.
Colombia (humid montane and lowland forest)
Torn or damaged new leaves
Cause: The long, narrow leaves are physically delicate as they unfurl, especially in low humidity
Fix: Keep humidity consistently high through the unfurling process and avoid moving or disturbing the plant while a new leaf is opening
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Painfully slow new growth
Cause: A genuinely slow-growing species, not necessarily a sign of a problem
Fix: Be patient and keep conditions stable rather than repeatedly changing light, feed or position to chase faster growth
