The name means 'torn' or 'lacerated,' a reference to the deeply incised, irregular margins that give Philodendron lacerum's large glossy leaves a ragged, almost prehistoric silhouette. Native to Caribbean islands — Cuba, Hispaniola and Jamaica — rather than the mainland South and Central American forests most collectable philodendrons come from, it climbs strongly as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte up tree trunks in moist, humid forest. Its habitat is restricted and declining.
Caribbean (Hispaniola, Cuba, Jamaica)
Shallower, less deeply incised leaf margins
Cause: No climbing support, or a young plant yet to reach mature leaf form
Fix: Add or extend a moss pole; the ragged, deeply lobed margins become more pronounced with maturity
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Leggy growth with long gaps between leaves
Cause: Insufficient light for a naturally vigorous climber
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light and provide a support to climb
