About Philodendron hederaceum 'Micans'

Philodendron hederaceum 'Micans' is a selection of the common heart-leaf philodendron, distinguished by its soft, velvety leaf texture. Originally derived from tropical Central and South American lineages, its deep green leaves have a shimmering bronze sheen. As a vining epiphyte, it naturally ascends trees in the humid understory, and grows well on climbing supports. It is a stable, easy-care houseplant widely grown in collections.

Before you buy

Check that roots are firm and white to tan; avoid plants with black, slimy, or absent roots
Confirm which named form you're actually buying — 'Brasil', 'Micans' and other cultivars are frequently priced and listed inconsistently under the hederaceum name
Inspect leaf undersides for thrips and mealybugs, though this species is generally more pest-resistant than the genus's collector species
Given how common and inexpensive this species genuinely is, treat any high asking price as a reason to check what specific cultivar is actually being sold

Philodendron hederaceum 'Micans' care

Substrate: A high-porosity mix — 50% perlite, 30% orchid bark, 20% coco coir — with a moss pole or totem if you want it climbing rather than trailing. It's genuinely tolerant of less-than-ideal substrate too, one of the few philodendrons that is.
Watering: Water thoroughly, then let the top third of the mix dry before watering again. Among the most forgiving plants in this catalogue for an occasional missed watering.
Humidity: Moderate, 50-70% — comfortable at ordinary UK household humidity without any special equipment, unlike many species in the genus.
Feeding: Feed at quarter strength every 3-4 weeks in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser; drop off almost entirely over winter. A light feeder that doesn't need or particularly want heavy fertilising.
Repotting: Repot every 12-18 months, or whenever it's visibly outgrown its pot — a fast, vigorous grower that fills a pot quickly.

Common problems

Long, bare stretches between leaves
Cause: Insufficient light, which this species tolerates but doesn't thrive in long-term
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light; growth compacts noticeably with better light
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Small, slow-growing leaves
Cause: A young cutting still establishing, or insufficient feeding through the growing season
Fix: Be patient with new cuttings and feed lightly but consistently once established

How to propagate Philodendron hederaceum 'Micans'

Methods: Stem cutting, Node cutting. Step-by-step guide
Difficulty: Moderate. Rewards a consistent watering and light routine, but tolerates the occasional lapse. Suited to growers with some houseplant experience.
Time to establish: 4-8 months
Notes: Stem cuttings with at least one node root reliably in plain water within 2-3 weeks — one of the easiest plants in this entire catalogue to propagate, which is exactly why it's everywhere.
