About Philodendron 'Congo'
Philodendron 'Congo' is the plain green parent of the widely grown Congo breeding group, best known through its red-leaved sport 'Congo Rojo'. The species itself carries large, glossy, deep green leaves on a tough, self-heading rosette with no climbing stem, and shares the group's easy care and rapid growth. Though plainer than its red-leaved offspring, plain Congo remains a dependable, inexpensive staple for anyone wanting a bold-leaved Philodendron without the premium usually attached to colour selections.

Horticultural hybrid, bred from Philodendron tatei and Philodendron erubescens lines.

Philodendron 'Congo' care
- Substrate
- Well-draining mix: 50% potting compost, 30% perlite, 20% orchid bark.
- Watering
- Water when the top 3-4 cm of substrate is dry. Reduce frequency in winter.
- Humidity
- Tolerates average household humidity; not a demanding species.
- Feeding
- Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4 weeks in spring and summer.
- Repotting
- Every 12-18 months, or when the crown outgrows its pot.
Common problems
Yellow lower leaves
Cause: Overwatering or natural leaf drop with age
Fix: Check substrate moisture before watering; some lower-leaf loss is normal as the plant matures
Small, pale leaves
Cause: Insufficient light
