About Syngonium
Syngonium is a Central and South American genus of climbing aroids grown for arrowhead-shaped (sagittate) juvenile leaves that become increasingly lobed with maturity. The trade is dominated by named colour cultivars of a single species, S. podophyllum, bred for pink, cream and tricolour pigmentation rather than leaf shape.
Care notes
- Leaf shape changes with maturity: juvenile Syngonium have a simple arrowhead leaf, while older, climbing growth develops deeply lobed, multi-fingered leaves; a plant kept small and unsupported stays in its juvenile form indefinitely.
- Pink and red-pigmented cultivars (Neon Robusta, Red Spot Tricolor, Pink Allusion) generally hold their colour better under bright light; low light shifts new growth toward green.
- Named colour forms are propagated by cutting from stable cultivar lines, not seed: S. podophyllum seedlings revert to plain green and won't reproduce a named cultivar's pattern.
Questions
Syngonium leaves become more deeply lobed as the plant matures and climbs; a young or unsupported plant stays in its simple arrowhead juvenile form.
Yes. Nearly all the pink, red, and tricolour cultivars in the trade (Pink Allusion, Neon Robusta, Strawberry Ice, and others) are colour selections of one species, S. podophyllum, not separate species.
No, named colour cultivars are maintained by cutting propagation; seed-grown plants revert toward the plain green wild-type leaf.
Both are climbing Neotropical aroids, but Syngonium is generally distinguished by its consistently arrowhead-to-lobed leaf shape and milky sap, while Philodendron shows far more variation in leaf form across the genus.
