About Syngonium steyermarkii
Syngonium steyermarkii is a distinct species valued for its narrow, deeply lobed, almost bird's-foot-shaped mature leaves, quite unlike the broad arrowhead leaves of the ubiquitous Syngonium podophyllum. It climbs readily given a support, and its unusual leaf silhouette has made it a niche but increasingly sought-after species among collectors looking beyond the many named podophyllum colour-form cultivars that dominate the genus's trade.

Before you buy
- Verify the seller's ID against reference photos, as mislabelling among lesser-known Syngonium species is common
- Check stem nodes are firm and undamaged
- Confirm the plant is rooted before purchasing if buying an unrooted cutting
Syngonium steyermarkii care
- Substrate
- Standard well-draining houseplant mix: 60% potting compost, 25% perlite, 15% orchid bark.
- Watering
- Allow the top few centimetres of substrate to dry between waterings.
- Humidity
- 60-80% for best leaf size and lobing.
- Feeding
- Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4 weeks during the growing season.
- Repotting
- Every 12-18 months, or when root-bound.
Common problems
Leaves remain simple/less lobed
Cause: Plant is juvenile
Fix: The deeply lobed mature leaf shape develops with age and a climbing support
Leggy, sparse growth
Cause: Insufficient light
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light; pinch growing tips to encourage bushier habit

How to propagate Syngonium steyermarkii
- Methods
- Stem cutting, Node cutting. Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Easy. Forgiving of missed waterings, average home humidity, and imperfect light. A solid pick for beginners or low-fuss collections.
- Time to establish
- 3-6 weeks
- True from cuttings
- Yes. Cuttings keep the cultivar's character.
- Notes
- Roots readily from stem or node cuttings in water or moist substrate, like most Syngonium species.
