Silvery spots over deep green, serrate-toothed margins, and a clean upright cane habit give Begonia serratipetala a more graphic, refined look than most cane begonias. Described by Irmsch. from the humid tropical forest understory of New Guinea, it grows on moist organic substrate in warm, shaded, high-humidity conditions with filtered light. Slender canes with distinct nodes carry asymmetrical, elongated leaves; reddish, bristly petioles and leaf undersides complete the look. It is more manageable than the Bornean species.
New Guinea (humid tropical forest understory)
Bare, leggy lower canes
Cause: Insufficient light, or old age as the lowest leaves naturally senesce
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light and prune leggy canes back to encourage fresh basal growth
Leaf drop
Cause: Underwatering, cold draughts, or a sudden change in humidity
Fix: Keep watering consistent and avoid moving the plant between very different microclimates
Basal stem rot
Cause: Waterlogged substrate or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Let the top few centimetres dry between waterings and repot into a freer-draining mix if rot recurs
