Begonia pavonina

The blue on Begonia pavonina isn't pigment — it's structural colour, produced by thin-film interference in specialised chloroplasts arranged in the leaf's upper epidermis, an adaptation that helps the plant capture what little light reaches the forest floor. Described by Ridley, it's endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, growing in deep shade on moist litter or humus-covered rock on gentle slopes and stream banks, where air humidity stays high year-round. Each asymmetrical, slightly bullate leaf shows that iridescent peacock-blue on top, deep red underneath. The effect intensifies in lower light, which sounds counterintuitive until you consider the forest floor it evolved on.
