A bright green stripe runs the full length of each leaf on Begonia listada, set against a surrounding lamina so dark it reads as near-black — a naturally occurring bicolour effect, not a cultivar selection. Described by L.B.Smith and Wasshausen from the moist, shaded forest understory of southeastern Brazil, it's a compact rhizomatous species that builds clumps from a short surface rhizome, velvety leaves finished with vivid red undersides. High humidity and even moisture in a humus-rich substrate keep it looking its best, and it performs unusually well in terrariums and other enclosed high-humidity displays.
Southeastern Brazil (humid shaded forest understory)
Crispy leaf margins
Cause: Humidity too low, especially outside an enclosed terrarium
Fix: Move to a closed or high-humidity setup rather than relying on misting alone, which only raises humidity briefly
Slow to establish after purchase or division
Cause: The small rhizome takes time to settle into new substrate
Fix: Keep conditions stable and humid for the first few weeks rather than repotting or moving it again
Fungal leaf spotting
Cause: Still, stagnant humid air with no airflow
Fix: Add gentle air movement (a small fan on low, or a terrarium vent) even in an enclosed setup
