Red, bristly stems announce Begonia malachosticta before the leaves do — setose petioles and canes that are hard to mistake for anything else in the genus. Described by Kollmann and Fontana from the shaded, humid tropical forests of Ecuador, it produces asymmetrical, elongate-ovate leaves with a dark green upper surface densely spotted in pale green to whitish maculations, deep red beneath. The plant grows as an upright, naturally branching cane rooted in the rich organic substrate of its native forest floor, reaching a moderate size that stays manageable indoors while remaining genuinely uncommon in the UK trade.
Ecuador (humid shaded tropical forest understory)
Bare, leggy lower canes
Cause: Insufficient light, or old age as the lowest leaves naturally senesce
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light and prune leggy canes back to encourage fresh basal growth
Leaf drop
Cause: Underwatering, cold draughts, or a sudden change in humidity
Fix: Keep watering consistent and avoid moving the plant between very different microclimates
Basal stem rot
Cause: Waterlogged substrate or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Let the top few centimetres dry between waterings and repot into a freer-draining mix if rot recurs
