Anthurium papillilaminum

Few anthuriums read as dark as Anthurium papillilaminum: elongated, cordate to triangular-cordate leaves in deep green to near-black, a dense velvety surface with venation so subtle it gives an almost monochromatic appearance. Native to Panama's humid tropical forest, it grows terrestrially or epiphytically in shaded understory, leaves tapering to a narrow apex from a compact basal crown with short internodes. It's one of the reference species for the black velvet Anthurium group — the plant other dark-leaved species and hybrids get compared to.
