Described by Croat and O.Ortiz from tropical forest spanning Panama to Colombia, Anthurium carlablackiae grows as a terrestrial or low epiphyte in deep leaf litter, developing short, tightly spaced internodes into a self-heading crown. Broad, cordate to ovate-cordate leaves run deep velvety dark green to near-black, crossed with crisp white venation; burgundy petioles deepen further with age, and a pale, pink-flushed spathe completes the picture. Among the velvet anthuriums this is one of the hardest to actually locate — a genuinely difficult plant to source rather than merely an expensive one.
Panama to Colombia (humid, shaded tropical forest understory)
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately, trim away any mushy roots, and let the plant recover in a smaller pot before sizing up again
Thrips or spider mite damage
Cause: Dry air and still conditions, especially indoors over winter
Fix: Increase humidity and airflow together, and treat visible pest damage with a systemic or contact treatment rather than water alone
Painfully slow new-leaf production
Cause: A genuinely slow-growing species even by velvet-anthurium standards, not necessarily a sign of a problem
Fix: Be patient and keep conditions stable rather than repeatedly changing light, feed or position to chase faster growth
