Before you buy
- Check the growing point (the newest, unopened leaf) for firmness — softness here usually means rot has already reached the crown
- Look at the root system through the drainage holes if possible; healthy roots are firm and pale, not brown and mushy
- Given how rarely this species is propagated, treat a very low price as a reason for extra scrutiny rather than good luck
- Look for well-developed bullation across the leaf surface, a sign of good growing conditions rather than a stressed, flatter leaf
About Anthurium faustomirandae
Described by Pérez-Farrera and Croat from the humid forest of Chiapas, Mexico, Anthurium faustomirandae grows on moist soil or limestone rock faces in shaded ravines with consistently high humidity. Its defining trait is texture: a heavily bullate, quilted leaf surface, thick and coriaceous, deep velvety green with strongly raised pale venation giving the blade a genuinely sculptural quality unmatched elsewhere in the genus. Stout upright petioles rise from a short crown on plants that grow terrestrially or on rock within a restricted natural range.

Anthurium faustomirandae care
- Substrate
- A chunky, open aroid mix — equal parts orchid bark, perlite and coco chunk, with a smaller portion of moss or coco coir for moisture retention — mimics the loose, well-aerated leaf litter these grow in naturally. A little added grit or limestone chip suits a species that also grows on limestone rock in the wild.
- Watering
- Water thoroughly, then let the top third of the mix dry before watering again. Velvet-leaf anthuriums are more sensitive to root rot than most houseplants, so err on the side of underwatering rather than keeping it constantly damp.
- Humidity
- Very high, 80-90%. A closed cabinet or terrarium suits it far better than open room air, matching the shaded, consistently humid ravines it grows in.
- Feeding
- Feed at quarter to half strength every 2 weeks in the growing season with a balanced, nitrogen-forward fertiliser; drop to monthly over winter. Heavy fertilising scorches the fine root system faster than it helps growth.
- Repotting
- Repot every 12-18 months, or when roots fill the pot and start pushing the plant upward. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one; these dislike being over-potted into a large volume of slow-drying mix.
Common problems
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately, trim away any mushy roots, and let the plant recover in a smaller pot before sizing up again
Thrips or spider mite damage
Cause: Dry air and still conditions, especially indoors over winter
Fix: Increase humidity and airflow together, and treat visible pest damage with a systemic or contact treatment rather than water alone
Failure to root from a cutting
Cause: This species rarely offsets and is challenging to propagate even by expert growers
Fix: Buy an established plant rather than a cutting or fresh division where possible, and don't treat a failed cutting as a sign you did something wrong

How to propagate Anthurium faustomirandae
- Methods
- Offset (keiki), Stem cutting. Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Expert Only. Demands precise humidity, temperature, and light control, often a greenhouse or grow tent. Prone to decline outside those conditions.
- Time to establish
- 12-24 months
- Notes
- One of the most challenging anthuriums to propagate. Rarely produces offshoots. Stem cuttings require perfect humidity and warmth over many months. Best left to specialist growers.
