About Epipremnum aureum 'Neon'

Neon Pothos is a solid, uniformly vivid chartreuse-yellow leaf with no variegation patches at all, a colour selection rather than a variegated sport. The intensity of the neon colour is strongly light-dependent: bright light keeps it yellow-green, while lower light causes it to green up considerably. One of the easiest and fastest-growing pothos cultivars.

Before you buy

Widely available and inexpensive; be cautious of collector-level pricing for the plain golden form
Confirm whether the plant is trailing (small juvenile leaves) or climbing (larger, mature leaves) before buying, as the two look markedly different at a similar price
For named variegated cultivars like 'Marble Queen' or 'N'Joy', confirm the pattern matches the specific named form rather than assuming any splashed-leaf pothos is interchangeable
Check stem nodes are firm and undamaged; this is where roots and new growth emerge from cuttings

Epipremnum aureum 'Neon' care

Substrate: A standard, well-draining indoor potting mix is sufficient for this adaptable plant. Adding a small amount of perlite or orchid bark will improve aeration and prevent soil compaction over time.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top third of the soil feels dry, ensuring excess moisture drains completely from the pot. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it is safer to let the soil dry slightly between waterings.
Humidity: This cultivar thrives in average household humidity, tolerating typical indoor air without issue. Maintaining moderate ambient moisture is entirely adequate for healthy foliage development.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength once a month during the active growing season. Withhold feeding entirely over winter when vegetative growth naturally slows down.
Repotting: Repot every 12 to 18 months, or when the root system clearly fills the current container. Select a new pot only one size larger to avoid retaining excess moisture in a large volume of soil.

Common problems

Loss of neon colouration
Cause: Insufficient light exposure causing the plant to produce more chlorophyll and turn dark green
Fix: Relocate the plant to a position with medium to bright indirect sunlight to encourage new growth to emerge with a vivid chartreuse hue
Yellowing lower leaves
Cause: Overwatering or soil that remains saturated for extended periods
Fix: Allow the potting mix to dry out further between waterings and ensure the container has adequate drainage holes
Brown, crispy leaf edges
Cause: Consistent underwatering, excessively dry air, or a build-up of fertiliser salts in the potting mix
Fix: Establish a regular watering routine, ensure average ambient humidity, and flush the soil periodically to remove excess minerals

How to propagate Epipremnum aureum 'Neon'

Methods: Stem cutting, Root division. Step-by-step guide
Difficulty: Easy. Forgiving of missed waterings, average home humidity, and imperfect light. A solid pick for beginners or low-fuss collections.
Time to establish: 1–2 months
Notes: Take stem cuttings ensuring each segment includes at least one node with a small aerial root. These root reliably and quickly when placed directly in water or a moist propagation medium. Once new roots reach a few centimetres in length, transfer the cuttings into a standard potting soil.
