A tight rosette of elongated, leathery leaves gives Anthurium superbum a habit closer to a bromeliad than to the sprawling velvet species most collectors picture. Native to humid lowland and montane forest in Costa Rica and Panama, the deep green blades carry a distinctly bronzy underside and quilted venation between prominent ribs, rising from a short, self-heading crown. It grows either terrestrially in rich organic soil or epiphytically on decaying wood and root masses, and it's the bold architectural presence — not colour or venation — that collectors value it for.
Costa Rica to Panama
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately and trim away any mushy roots
Bacterial or fungal leaf spotting
Cause: Water sitting in the rosette's central cup or on the leaf surface
Fix: Water at the base and avoid letting water pool in the crown of the rosette
Pale, stretched growth
Cause: Insufficient light for a species that wants brighter conditions than the shade-loving velvet types
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light
