Before you buy
- Check the petiole margins are intact and not torn; the ruffled edges are delicate on young growth.
- Confirm the plant has, or has room for, a climbing support; unsupported specimens stay smaller.
About Anthurium brownii
Anthurium brownii is a hemi-epiphytic climber from the tropical Americas, grown for large, tri-lobed leaves that can reach 80cm long on a satin-textured blade with ruffled petiole margins. Given something to climb, it grows faster than most large-leaved Anthurium species. That faster growth keeps prices moderate.

Anthurium brownii care
- Substrate
- Coarse, well-aerated mix: orchid bark, perlite and a little charcoal. Needs a moss pole or trellis to climb as it matures.
- Watering
- Water when the top third of the substrate is dry. Its faster growth rate means it dries out and needs watering more often than slower Anthurium.
- Humidity
- 70-85%; leaf margins ruffle and brown at the edges if humidity drops for extended periods.
- Feeding
- Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 3-4 weeks; faster growth supports more frequent feeding than slow-growing Anthurium.
- Repotting
- Annually while young and climbing; established plants can go 2 years between repots.
Common problems
Leaves failing to reach full size
Cause: No climbing support
Fix: Provide a moss pole or trellis, since leaf size increases substantially once the plant is climbing.
