Small, vibrant red berries are as much a feature of Anthurium scandens as its foliage — a slender epiphytic climber that produces delicate, small, elliptic to ovate leaves rather than the broad cordate blades most collector anthuriums are grown for. Native to tropical forest from Mexico and the Caribbean through South America, it ascends trees using adventitious roots that grip moss and bark, a genuinely different growth habit from the self-heading rosette species that dominate the genus in cultivation. Valued for that graceful, miniature vining habit as much as for the berries themselves.
Tropical America from Mexico and the Caribbean through South America
Thin, sparse growth
Cause: Insufficient light for a species that, despite its shade tolerance, still needs decent brightness to stay compact
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light rather than deep shade
No berries produced
Cause: Immature growth, or a plant that hasn't yet flowered under current conditions
Fix: Be patient — berries follow flowering, which takes an established, healthy plant rather than a recent cutting
Root or stem rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet
Fix: Let the mix dry further between waterings and check the pot or mount is draining freely
