Begonia Venosa succulentUS$33 · 9 Jun 2026
Thick, succulent-textured leaves densely coated in fine white hairs give Begonia venosa a silvery-grey, felted look that has nothing in common with the lush forest-floor begonias most collectors start with. Described by Skan from rocky Brazilian habitats, it's among the most xerophytic species in the genus, growing in bright filtered to light shade on well-drained mineral substrate that dries out seasonally — conditions closer to a succulent's than a tropical begonia's. Stout petioles and a low, compact clumping habit from a short creeping base reflect that adaptation to dry periods. It suits collectors who've worked through the standard cane and rex forms and want something with genuinely different needs.
Brazil (rocky habitats, well-drained mineral substrate)
Base or stem rot
Cause: Substrate that stays damp, particularly over winter
Fix: Cut back watering immediately and check the mix is draining freely; repot into a grittier mix if water is pooling
Water-spotted or matted leaf hairs
Cause: Misting or overhead watering wetting the felted leaf surface
Fix: Water at the base only and let the foliage stay dry
Leggy, stretched growth
Cause: Insufficient light
Fix: Move to a brighter spot; venosa tolerates more direct light than the shade-loving forest-floor begonias
