Before you buy
- Check the small base is firm, since this miniature scale makes rot hard to catch early
- Look for a dense, healthy tuft of leaves rather than a thin, sparse one
- Confirm the substrate isn't waterlogged at the point of sale — this species wants sharp drainage, unlike most begonias in the collection
- Verify the seller can confirm the species identity rather than a generic 'grass begonia' label
About Begonia bogneri
Nothing about Begonia bogneri looks like a begonia at first glance: a compact tuft of very narrow, grass-like linear leaves on fine reddish petioles, with none of the broad asymmetric blades that define most of the genus. Described by Ziesenh. from humid rocky habitats in Madagascar, it grows on sharply drained substrate in warm, brightly filtered conditions with consistent atmospheric humidity — a specific enough profile that it's sought out mainly by specialists in Begonia or in Madagascan flora, precisely because it challenges every assumption about what the genus is supposed to look like.

Begonia bogneri care
- Substrate
- A fine, sharply drained mix — 50% perlite or pumice, 30% potting compost, 20% fine bark — closer to the drainage of a rocky-habitat species than most of the genus, even though it still wants consistent humidity around the foliage.
- Watering
- Water little and often, letting the surface dry slightly between waterings; the sharply drained substrate it needs means it dries faster than a typical begonia mix, so don't let it go bone dry for long.
- Humidity
- Moderate to high, 65-80%, delivered as consistent atmospheric humidity around the plant rather than wet substrate — it comes from rocky habitat, not forest floor litter.
- Feeding
- Feed sparingly — an eighth-to-quarter-strength liquid fertiliser once a month in the growing season is enough. It's a slow-growing miniature and easily over-fed.
- Repotting
- Rarely needed given its small mature size. Move up a pot size only when the tuft visibly outgrows its container.
Common problems
Thinning, yellowing grass-like leaves
Cause: Substrate staying too wet for a sharply-drained-habitat species
Fix: Let the surface dry between waterings and check the mix is draining as freely as it should
Slow to establish after purchase or division
Cause: The small base takes time to settle into new substrate
Fix: Keep conditions stable and humid for the first few weeks rather than repotting or moving it again
Fungal leaf spotting
Cause: Still, stagnant humid air with no airflow
Fix: Add gentle air movement even in a humid spot — a small fan on low is enough

How to propagate Begonia bogneri
- Methods
- Leaf cutting, Stem cutting, Rhizome division. Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Easy. Forgiving of missed waterings, average home humidity, and imperfect light. A solid pick for beginners or low-fuss collections.
- Time to establish
- 3-5 months
- True from cuttings
- Yes. Cuttings keep the cultivar's character.
- Notes
- Divide the tuft into small offsets with their own roots rather than attempting leaf cuttings, which don't work well on the near-linear foliage; keep divisions warm and humid until they resume active growth.
