Begonia Plant -- Begonia bipinnatifida ~ Terrarium/ VivariumUS$35 · 3 Apr 2026
Nothing about Begonia bipinnatifida looks like a typical begonia leaf. Described by J.J.Smith from the humid montane and lowland forests of New Guinea, its foliage is deeply bipinnatifid — divided, then divided again into narrow, toothed lobes — producing an almost fern-like, feathery silhouette carried on red petioles from a creeping rhizome, with reddish undersides accentuating each lobe. It grows in warm, shaded, consistently moist conditions on organic substrate, and appeals specifically to collectors whose interest in the genus runs toward genuine botanical oddity rather than the familiar cane and rex forms.
New Guinea (humid montane and lowland tropical forest)
Rhizome rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, or a rhizome partially buried in compost
Fix: Cut back to firm, healthy tissue, let the wound callus, and keep the rhizome fully exposed at the surface going forward
Browning leaf tips and lobes
Cause: Humidity too low for the deeply dissected foliage
Fix: Move to a more enclosed, humid setup rather than relying on misting alone
Stalled growth after division
Cause: A division with too small a section of rhizome or too few roots
Fix: Keep divisions warm and humid until new growth resumes, which can take several weeks
