Dark green to nearly black leaves with bold, contrasting pale venation put Anthurium villenaorum in the same conversation as the finest velvet anthuriums grown today. Described by Croat, it's a compact epiphyte from the humid, shaded montane rainforest of Peru's San Martín region, growing on tree trunks and branches in high humidity and filtered light year-round. Short petioles and a tight crown with visible ephemeral roots give it a neat habit; inflorescences rarely appear in cultivation. Difficult to grow to its full potential outside a precisely controlled environment, it's one of the more discussed species among advanced Anthurium collectors specifically because so few have actually grown it well.
Peru (San Martín region, humid shaded montane rainforest)
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately, trim away any mushy roots, and let the plant recover in a smaller pot before sizing up again
Stunted growth in open room air
Cause: This species genuinely underperforms outside tightly controlled, very high humidity
Fix: Move to a closed cabinet or terrarium rather than persisting with an open shelf setup
Thrips or spider mite damage
Cause: Dry air and still conditions, especially indoors over winter
Fix: Increase humidity and airflow together, and treat visible pest damage with a systemic or contact treatment rather than water alone
