A robust root system and a large, strap-like rosette give Anthurium schlechtendalii genuine architectural presence, closer in spirit to a big bromeliad than to the smaller velvet species most of this collection favours. Native from Mexico down to northern South America, it grows as both epiphyte and terrestrial, nesting in tree crotches or rooting directly into the humid forest floor. Leaves emerge from a central crown in a self-heading rosette, glossy and slightly wavy at the margin. Collectors grow it for exactly that structural form and root mass rather than for colour or venation.
Mexico to northern South America
Bacterial or fungal leaf spotting
Cause: Water sitting in the rosette's central cup
Fix: Water at the base and avoid letting water pool in the crown
Slow to size up
Cause: A pot too small for the eventual root mass this species develops
Fix: Repot into a larger, stable container once roots visibly fill the current one
