- Check the keeled midrib on the underside of leaves is firm, not soft or discoloured.
- Confirm the rosette has adequate space to size up; mature plants become large.
About Anthurium crassinervium
Anthurium crassinervium is a large birdsnest-type species from the tropical Americas, forming an erect rosette of thick, wavy-margined leaves up to 90cm long with a distinctive keeled midrib underneath. It tolerates drier air than most Anthurium and is one of the easier large species to grow. That tolerance and ease keep it accessibly priced relative to its size.

Anthurium crassinervium care
- Substrate
- Chunky, well-draining mix: bark, perlite and potting compost. Its thick roots tolerate a coarser mix than most Anthurium.
- Watering
- Water when the top half of the substrate is dry. Its thick, coriaceous leaves store water well and it tolerates missed waterings better than most large Anthurium.
- Humidity
- 60-85%; the most drought- and dry-air-tolerant species in this group, suited to average UK household conditions.
- Feeding
- Balanced liquid fertiliser at quarter strength every 4 weeks during active growth.
- Repotting
- Every 2-3 years, sizing up as the rosette widens; a large plant needs a correspondingly large, stable pot.
Common problems
Yellowing lower leaves
Cause: Overwatering: its thick leaves store water and need less frequent watering than thinner-leaved Anthurium
Fix: Reduce watering frequency and check the substrate has fully dried before the next watering.

How to propagate Anthurium crassinervium
- Methods
- Offset (keiki), Stem cutting. Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Easy. Forgiving of missed waterings, average home humidity, and imperfect light. A solid pick for beginners or low-fuss collections.
- Time to establish
- 3-6 months
