Before you buy
- Check the rosette is tight and symmetrical, not lopsided from uneven light.
- Confirm leaf margins are glossy, not matte; glossy foliage distinguishes this species from the genus's velvet-leaved forms.
About Anthurium hookeri
The tight rosette of stiff, glossy leaves on Anthurium hookeri is thought to serve a practical purpose in the wild: catching falling forest litter, which then breaks down into a ready nutrient source at the plant's own base. Leaves run up to 80cm with slightly wavy margins, and unlike the genus's better-known velvet species, the surface here is glossy rather than matte or plush. It's an easy, stably priced species in the trade, with a variegated form traded separately.

Anthurium hookeri care
- Substrate
- Chunky, well-draining mix: bark, perlite and potting compost. Its stiff, coriaceous leaves tolerate a coarser substrate than velvet-leaved Anthurium.
- Watering
- Water when the top half of the substrate is dry (one of the more drought-tolerant species in the genus).
- Humidity
- 60-80%; comfortable at typical household humidity without supplemental equipment.
- Feeding
- Balanced liquid fertiliser at quarter strength every 4 weeks during active growth.
- Repotting
- Every 2-3 years, sizing up as the rosette widens.
Common problems
Yellowing lower leaves
Cause: Overwatering
Fix: Reduce watering frequency and confirm the pot has adequate drainage.
