Before you buy
- Check aerial roots are present and healthy rather than shrivelled, a sign of long-term underwatering or poor humidity
- Ask whether the plant has been grown in a basket or pot — one recently moved from a basket into a solid pot may need time to adjust
- Inspect leaf tips for browning, a common and visible sign of insufficient humidity on this species
- Ask about origin rather than assuming an unusually cheap listing is a bargain
About Anthurium cutucuense
Long, narrow leaves hang and arch from Anthurium cutucuense's small basal root mass rather than standing upright, a pendant habit that sets it apart from the compact rosette form most collector anthuriums take. Native to the shaded cloud forests of Ecuador, the mature blades are dark green, leathery and conspicuously ribbed or bullate along a strong midrib. It's the narrow, textured leaf and trailing habit collectors seek this species out for, more than colour or venation.

Anthurium cutucuense care
- Substrate
- A very open, bark-heavy mix — mostly orchid bark and perlite with only a little coco coir — matches the free-draining conditions of the tree branches this species grows on in the wild. A basket or slatted pot suits the pendant habit better than a solid one.
- Watering
- Water thoroughly and let it dry out more than a terrestrial anthurium would tolerate; epiphytic roots are adapted to wet-then-dry cycles, not constant moisture, and rot quickly in anything that stays soggy.
- Humidity
- Very high, 80-95%, in cool-to-intermediate temperatures matching its cloud-forest origin. A closed, humid cabinet suits it better than open room air.
- Feeding
- Feed at quarter strength every 2 weeks in the growing season — epiphytic roots absorb nutrients efficiently from airflow and rainfall in the wild, so they don't need or want a heavy feeding regime.
- Repotting
- Best grown in a hanging basket or mounted rather than repotted into an ever-larger pot; refresh the mix every 12-18 months rather than sizing up, since the trailing growth is the point of the plant.
Common problems
Root rot in the basket or pot
Cause: A mix too dense to drain fast enough, or a solid pot with no side airflow
Fix: Move to a slatted basket or very open bark mix, and check drainage before watering again
Shorter, less pendant leaves than expected
Cause: Insufficient light, producing weaker, less developed growth
Fix: Move to brighter indirect light — the long trailing leaves this species is grown for need decent light to reach full size
Dry, browning leaf tips
Cause: Humidity too low for a genuinely cloud-forest epiphyte
Fix: Increase ambient humidity or move to a more enclosed, humid space rather than open room air

How to propagate Anthurium cutucuense
- Methods
- Stem cutting, Offset (keiki). Step-by-step guide
- Difficulty
- Challenging. Needs stable humidity, consistent moisture, and bright indirect light to thrive. Best suited to experienced aroid growers.
- Time to establish
- 8-14 months
- Notes
- Best propagated by air-layering a length of stem still attached to the parent, or by top cuttings with aerial roots already showing; this pendant epiphyte is slower and less reliable from a bare cutting than the compact terrestrial species.
