Each leaf on 'Escargot' unfurls from a tight spiral at the base, and the coil stays visible on mature foliage as a dark swirl against silvery-pewter and dark green zoning — a structural quirk no other widely available begonia produces. It's a horticultural selection from the rex begonia complex, whose Asian ancestry runs from northeastern India through southern China, developed for exactly this kind of ornamental leaf structure. Velvety, textured foliage with maroon undersides and ruffled, asymmetric margins amplifies the sculptural effect.
Cultivated selection (derived from Asian Begonia rex ancestry, northeastern India through southern China)
Crispy leaf margins
Cause: Humidity too low, particularly in centrally heated rooms over winter
Fix: Group with other plants or use a pebble tray to raise local humidity; a full terrarium isn't essential for this cultivar
Slow to establish after purchase or division
Cause: The small rhizome takes time to settle into new substrate
Fix: Keep conditions stable and humid for the first few weeks rather than repotting or moving it again
Fungal leaf spotting
Cause: Still, stagnant humid air with no airflow
Fix: Add gentle air movement even in a humid spot — a small fan on low is enough
