Before you buy
- Check for firm, unblemished spathes if buying while in flower.
- If after a specific cultivar, confirm the exact name: 'scherzerianum' covers many widely available selected forms sold under different trade names.
About Anthurium scherzerianum
Most Anthurium species in this collection are bought for foliage; scherzerianum, the flamingo flower, is the one bought for flowers. A curled orange-red spadix set against a bright red spathe rises from compact, clumping growth with narrow leaves, and it's by far the most widely available species in the genus, sold as a standard flowering houseplant well beyond specialist collector circles. Common, inexpensive and notably pest-resistant, though wild-collected forms and selected cultivars still hold real collector interest.

Anthurium scherzerianum care
- Substrate
- Standard well-draining aroid or houseplant mix: potting compost, perlite and a little orchid bark.
- Watering
- Water when the top 3-4cm of substrate is dry. More tolerant of standard houseplant watering routines than most Anthurium in this catalogue.
- Humidity
- 60-80%; grows well at typical household humidity without supplemental equipment.
- Feeding
- Balanced liquid fertiliser at quarter strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth, or a specialist flowering-houseplant feed to encourage repeat blooms.
- Repotting
- Every 1-2 years, a fast-clumping species that fills its pot relatively quickly.
Common problems
Reduced flowering
Cause: Insufficient light
Fix: Move to a brighter spot with strong indirect light; flowering slows noticeably in low light.
