Prominent corrugations give Anthurium rugulosum's elongated-cordate leaves a deeply textured, relief-map quality in dark green — strongly rugose and bullate, with a thick substance that sets the surface apart even among the genus's other textured species. Described by Sodiro from humid montane forest in Ecuador, it grows on the shaded forest floor or low on humus-covered roots and rotting wood, in consistently moist conditions. Short petioles rise from a close-formed crown, keeping the whole plant tight and compact — valued among collectors for the intensity of its surface patterning as much as its clean, architectural overall form.
Ecuador (humid montane forest understory)
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately, trim away any mushy roots, and let the plant recover in a smaller pot before sizing up again
Stalled growth in a warm room
Cause: This montane species prefers cooler conditions than most collector anthuriums
Fix: Move to a cooler spot rather than assuming standard warm-room anthurium care applies
Flattened corrugation on new leaves
Cause: Insufficient light or humidity for the rugose texture to develop fully
Fix: Increase both together; the relief-map surface this species is grown for is a direct response to good conditions
