Young leaves on Anthurium pedatoradiatum start out undivided or only shallowly lobed; mature ones split into deeply and completely lobed, pedate fingers radiating from a central point, a leaf shape almost no other Anthurium develops. Native to seasonally dry tropical forest in southern Mexico, it grows as an epiphyte or compact subshrub on bark, rocky substrate or accumulated organic material, forming a short central stem with basal roots. Where most collector anthuriums are bought for cordate, velvet leaves, this species offers an architecturally different alternative — a genuinely different silhouette rather than a variation on the usual theme.
Southern Mexico (seasonally dry tropical forest)
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately, trim away any mushy roots, and let the plant recover in a smaller pot before sizing up again
Leaves staying undivided rather than developing the pedate lobed form
Cause: A young or juvenile plant — the deeply lobed leaf shape only appears at maturity
Fix: Nothing to fix; be patient and keep growing conditions good, since the mature leaf form takes time to develop
Pest damage on new growth
Cause: Dry air and still conditions, especially indoors over winter
Fix: Increase humidity and airflow together, and treat visible pest damage with a systemic or contact treatment rather than water alone
