Crossing Anthurium nigrolaminum 'Gigi' with a selected, extra-dark form of Anthurium papillilaminum produces exactly what the name promises: extremely dark, velvety, coriaceous leaves with prominent silver-white primary venation standing out against the near-black blade. Both parent species are South American in origin (Colombia/Ecuador/Peru and Panama respectively), but this specific cross is a Thai breeding-programme product rather than anything found in the wild. Elongated heart-sagittate leaves deepen further in colour as they mature, on a plant that demands the same humid, warm conditions as its tropical forest-understory parents.
No wild native range: a horticultural hybrid of Anthurium nigrolaminum (native to southern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and northeastern Peru) and A. papillilaminum (native to Panama); produced and circulated through Thai breeding programmes.
Root rot
Cause: Substrate that stays wet, often from a mix that's too dense or a pot with poor drainage
Fix: Repot into a chunkier mix immediately, trim away any mushy roots, and let the plant recover in a smaller pot before sizing up again
Thrips or spider mite damage
Cause: Dry air and still conditions, especially indoors over winter
Fix: Increase humidity and airflow together, and treat visible pest damage with a systemic or contact treatment rather than water alone
Leaves greening up rather than staying near-black
Cause: Light too low, or a plant grown from weaker, less selected stock
Fix: Increase indirect light slightly, and buy from a source that can show the parent plant's colour if the dark finish matters to you
A cross, priced and tracked separately from both parents.
