About Alocasia × amazonica 'Venom' Aurea

Alocasia × amazonica 'Venom' originated around 2019 as a spontaneous mutation identified by Mason Plants in South Korea. It grows to 30-45cm with upright rhizomatous growth and shield-shaped leaves ending in an elongated, fang-like tip. The Aurea form carries gold and chartreuse marbling through the leaf blade rather than the hard-edged white sectors seen on its plain 'Variegated' sibling, and the pattern shifts unpredictably from one leaf to the next.

Before you buy

Confirm the yellow and gold marbling is distributed across more than one leaf, as some specimens on the market produce entirely green leaves
Check the rhizome and roots are firm before purchase, since this is a slow grower that takes longer to recover from a weak start
Compare the asking price against recent sold listings for the Aurea form specifically, not the plain Venom or the cream-white Variegated form, which sell at different levels
Ask for photos in natural light, since gold variegation can be difficult to distinguish from the plain green base under artificial grow lights

Alocasia × amazonica 'Venom' Aurea care

Substrate: Well-draining loamy mix: 40% potting compost, 30% perlite, 20% orchid bark, 10% worm castings.
Watering: Keep evenly moist, never waterlogged. Reduce watering over winter when growth slows further than the already-slow standard rate.
Humidity: 65% or above. The gold and chartreuse sections scorch more easily than the plain green base, so pair high humidity with bright, diffused rather than direct light.
Feeding: Balanced fertiliser at half strength every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer. Stop feeding in winter.
Repotting: Every 12-18 months in spring, moving up one pot size only.

Common problems

Gold sections scorching
Cause: Direct sun reaching the reduced-chlorophyll tissue
Fix: Move to bright, indirect or diffused light and keep it out of direct sun
New leaves emerging entirely green
Cause: Insufficient light or a division that reverted
Fix: Increase light levels; if reversion continues across several leaves, the variegation may not hold on that particular division
Slow growth or stalled leaves
Cause: Normal for this cultivar, compounded by low light or cool temperatures
Fix: Maintain 18-28°C and bright indirect light, and be patient with the naturally slow growth rate

How to propagate Alocasia × amazonica 'Venom' Aurea

Methods: Offset (corm/pup), Rhizome division. Step-by-step guide
Difficulty: Moderate. Rewards a consistent watering and light routine, but tolerates the occasional lapse. Suited to growers with some houseplant experience.
Time to establish: 4-8 months
Notes: Divide rhizome sections with at least one growth point once the mother plant is well established. Gold marbling is not fixed leaf to leaf, so a division with little gold showing can still develop more as it matures.
