About Alocasia amazonica 'Polly' Pink

Alocasia amazonica 'Polly' is a dwarf selection of an artificial hybrid between Alocasia sanderiana and Alocasia watsoniana. It produces sagittate, glossy dark green leaves with undulating margins and bold silver-white veins. The pink-variegated form displays random sectors and marbling in shades of peachy pink and creamy chartreuse. This variegation is not fixed and varies significantly from leaf to leaf.

Before you buy

Check multiple leaves on the same plant to confirm the pink variegation is present beyond a single photographed leaf, since the pattern shifts randomly between emergent leaves
Inspect the corm and roots for firmness; a heavily pink plant with a weak root system is a poor combination given its already-reduced growth rate
Check leaf undersides for spider mites and thrips before introducing the plant to your collection
Compare the asking price against recent sold listings for this exact form; the plain green plant sells for a fraction of the variegated price, so a mislabelled listing is easy to overpay for

Alocasia amazonica 'Polly' Pink care

Substrate: Well-draining loamy mix: 40% potting compost, 30% perlite, 20% orchid bark, 10% worm castings.
Watering: Keep evenly moist during the growing season, never waterlogged or bone dry. The pink and chartreuse sections carry less chlorophyll than the green tissue, so growth is slower and the plant is more sensitive to overwatering than the standard green Polly.
Humidity: 60% or higher. Low humidity causes brown leaf edges, and the pale sections are more prone to marking than solid green tissue.
Feeding: Balanced fertiliser at half strength every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, reduced to match the plant's slower growth rate. Stop feeding in winter.
Repotting: Every 12-18 months in spring. Keep the pot slightly snug rather than sizing up aggressively.

Common problems

Leaves reverting to solid green
Cause: Insufficient light reducing the pink mutation's expression
Fix: Move to a brighter spot with more indirect light
Root rot in heavily pink specimens
Cause: Reduced photosynthetic capacity slows water uptake, so standard watering leaves the substrate wet for longer
Fix: Let the substrate dry further between waterings and check root health regularly
Brown leaf edges
Cause: Low humidity or irregular watering
Fix: Increase humidity and maintain a consistent watering routine

How to propagate Alocasia amazonica 'Polly' Pink

Methods: Offset (corm/pup), Corm division. Step-by-step guide
Difficulty: Easy. Forgiving of missed waterings, average home humidity, and imperfect light. A solid pick for beginners or low-fuss collections.
Time to establish: 3-6 months
Notes: Divide offsets from the mother plant once they have their own root system. A pup with no pink sectors at all may still develop them in later leaves, since the pattern is not fixed.
