Alocasia azlanii is a compact terrestrial herb native to the lowland and montane rainforests of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It has dark, metallic-green to maroon leaves distinguished by vivid, iridescent pink to red venation. The plant grows from a distinct basal corm, maintaining a neat basal rosette habit that remains smaller and more bullate than its relative, Alocasia reginula. It grows in humid, shaded conditions and requires well-drained, humus-rich soil to mimic its natural forest-floor habitat.
Endemic to Sabah, Malaysian Borneo (Montane forests)
Corm and root rot
Cause: Overwatering or using a dense substrate that retains excess moisture around the base
Fix: Remove the plant from its pot, trim away mushy roots, and replant into a highly aerated mix in a slightly smaller pot
Spider mite infestations
Cause: Dry indoor air and poor ventilation, which allow populations to establish on the textured leaf surfaces
Fix: Increase humidity around the plant and treat visible pests with a targeted contact spray or horticultural soap
Crisping leaf edges
Cause: Fluctuating humidity levels or inconsistent watering that lets the root zone dry out completely
Fix: Maintain humidity above 60% and ensure the potting mix stays evenly moist but not waterlogged
