About Spathiphyllum 'Picasso'
Picasso carries bold, asymmetric white variegation running along one side of the leaf blade, an abstract, painterly split that gives the cultivar its name, distinct from Domino's scattered streaking. It shares the same easygoing, low-light-tolerant nature and recognisable white spathe flowers as the rest of the Spathiphyllum wallisii family.

Before you buy
- Widely available and inexpensive: be cautious of collector-level pricing for the plain species
- A drooping, wilted appearance in a listing photo isn't necessarily a sign of poor health; this species droops noticeably when thirsty and recovers within hours of watering
- For the variegated 'Domino' or 'Picasso' forms, confirm the white/cream pattern in photos matches the specific named cultivar rather than assuming any patterned Peace Lily is interchangeable
- Check for a full, multi-leaf clump rather than a single leaf at this price point
Spathiphyllum 'Picasso' care
- Substrate
- A moisture-retentive but well-aerated soil mix suits this species best. A standard peat-free houseplant compost blended with a third perlite or orchid bark prevents the roots from sitting in water.
- Watering
- Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. The plant droops noticeably when thirsty and recovers rapidly upon watering, though consistent wilting can cause brown leaf tips.
- Humidity
- It adapts well to average household humidity, but maintaining levels around 50 to 60 percent prevents crispy leaf margins. Grouping it with other plants or using a pebble tray provides sufficient moisture in dry indoor air.
- Feeding
- Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength once a month during the active growing season. Withhold feeding over winter when the plant's growth slows down.
- Repotting
- Repot every 12 to 18 months, or when the dense root system completely fills the container. Select a pot only one size larger to avoid holding excess moisture in the unoccupied soil.
Common problems
Brown leaf tips
Cause: Low humidity, inconsistent watering, or the accumulation of minerals from tap water
Fix: Maintain a steady watering schedule, increase ambient humidity, and occasionally flush the root zone with rainwater
Lack of flowers
Cause: Prolonged exposure to very low light, despite the plant's general shade tolerance
Fix: Relocate the plant to a position with bright, indirect light to encourage new spathes, ensuring it is shielded from direct sun
Yellowing lower leaves
Cause: Overwatering and poorly draining soil
Fix: Allow the top third of the soil to dry before watering again, and check that the pot drainage holes are not blocked

How to propagate Spathiphyllum 'Picasso'
- Methods
- Division, Seed
- Difficulty
- Easy. Forgiving of missed waterings, average home humidity, and imperfect light. A solid pick for beginners or low-fuss collections.
- Time to establish
- 2-3 months
- True from cuttings
- Yes. Cuttings keep the cultivar's character.
- Notes
- Division is the simplest method for mature specimens that have formed a dense basal clump. Separate the root ball into sections during spring repotting, ensuring each division retains a portion of the root system and several leaves. Pot these sections directly into fresh soil and keep them slightly moist while they recover.
