Wilbert Hetterscheid described Amorphophallus atroviridis in 1994 based on material from central Thailand. It occurs as a seasonal geophyte growing among limestone rocks in provinces such as Saraburi and Lopburi. The plant produces a single umbrella-like leaf on a mottled petiole, featuring near-black velvety foliage with a continuous pink-crimson margin. It follows a strict seasonal cycle, dying back to an underground tuber that must be kept completely dry throughout winter dormancy.
