Monstera epipremnoides is native to the humid premontane and lowland forests of Costa Rica and Panama. It thrives as a hemiepiphyte, climbing tree trunks with aerial roots. The plant is characterized by long, elliptic to oblong leaves with conspicuous, elongated fenestrations arranged in orderly rows. The margins of the leaves are entire or only slightly undulate, and the stem is robust and climbing. It prefers warm, humid conditions with high rainfall and filtered light, which support vigorous growth.
Costa Rica to Panama
Root rot
Cause: Overwatering or poor drainage leading to waterlogged soil
Fix: Unpot the plant to inspect the roots, remove any decaying tissue, and repot into a fresh, freely draining aroid mix.
Lack of fenestrations on new leaves
Cause: Insufficient light or a lack of structural support for the climbing stem
Fix: Move the plant to a brighter spot with filtered light and ensure the aerial roots can attach to a pole.
Thrips or mealybug infestations
Cause: Warm indoor environments combined with poor airflow
Fix: Isolate the plant, wipe down the foliage regularly, and apply a suitable systemic or contact pesticide.
