Paul Standley described Anthurium clidemioides in 1940, noting its unusual foliar resemblance to plants in the genus Clidemia. Native to wet lowland and premontane rainforests in Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia, it grows as a climbing epiphyte. The species differs from typical rosette anthuriums by forming a wiry climbing vine with corky-tubercled stems and bullate quilted leaves. It requires a textured cedar plank or moist moss pole to climb, as trailing stems without support produce dwarfed foliage.

Stalled leaf growth and leaf size regression
Cause: Air humidity dropping below 70% or a dry climbing support
Fix: Moisten the climbing pole regularly and maintain relative humidity above 75%
Basal leaf yellowing
Cause: Compacted, overly wet potting mix around lower subterranean roots
Fix: Repot into a coarser mix with increased bark and perlite for improved drainage
