About Alocasia Jacklyn

Alocasia Jacklyn (botanically Alocasia tandurusa) is a species endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its deeply lobed, arrow-shaped leaves have an architectural silhouette, with a neon-green blade surface contrasted against stark dark green or brown veins. A distinct fuzzy, hair-like texture (trichomes) covers the leaf surface, setting it apart from almost all other Alocasia species. Its petioles carry brown and cream zebra-like mottling.

Before you buy

Confirm the fuzzy, hairy (pubescent) leaf texture is present in listing photos. Trichomes are unusual for the genus, and a smooth-leaved plant sold under this name is likely mislabelled
Check the petiole for the zebra-like brown-and-cream mottling described for this species; a plain green petiole suggests a different plant
Base-species listings should be priced well under Variegated or Aurea forms, which sell for several times the plain form's price; treat a high asking price for the plain green form with caution
Ask about corm and growth-point condition, since this is a tuberous grower rather than a stem-rooted one
'Alocasia Jacklyn' and 'Alocasia tandurusa' are the same plant; confirm a listing's photos match one specimen, not a mixed batch sold under both names

Alocasia Jacklyn care

Substrate: A chunky, well-draining aroid mix combining orchid bark, perlite, and a smaller amount of potting compost prevents waterlogging around the tuber. The mix needs to retain some moisture while allowing rapid drainage to prevent rot.
Watering: Water thoroughly once the top few centimetres of substrate have dried out. Alocasias are susceptible to root rot if left sitting in wet soil, so ensure pots have excellent drainage.
Humidity: Maintain ambient humidity at 60% or higher to support the textured leaves and prevent excessive transpiration. Lower humidity can lead to crispy leaf edges and increased vulnerability to pests.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every two to four weeks during the active growing season. Suspend fertilising over winter or if the plant drops its leaves and enters dormancy.
Repotting: Repot only when the root system fully fills the current container, typically every one to two years. Choose a pot just one size larger, as excess unrooted substrate holds moisture that can damage the tuber.

Common problems

Spider mites
Cause: Dry indoor air combined with the plant's textured, pubescent leaves creates an ideal environment for mites.
Fix: Increase ambient humidity and treat visible infestations with a suitable miticide, ensuring the undersides of the leaves are covered.
Root and tuber rot
Cause: Overwatering or a heavy, dense potting mix that lacks sufficient airflow around the root zone.
Fix: Unpot the plant, trim away any mushy roots, and replant in a dry, chunky aroid mix using a smaller pot to aid recovery.
Winter dormancy and leaf drop
Cause: Temperature drops below 18°C or significantly reduced light levels can trigger the tuber to shed leaves.
Fix: Reduce watering significantly if leaves drop, and keep the tuber in a warm spot until new growth emerges in spring.

How to propagate Alocasia Jacklyn

Methods: Corm separation, Rhizome division. Step-by-step guide
Difficulty: Moderate. Rewards a consistent watering and light routine, but tolerates the occasional lapse. Suited to growers with some houseplant experience.
Time to establish: 3-6 months
True from cuttings: Yes. Cuttings keep the cultivar's character.
Notes: Alocasias naturally produce small corms around the base of the main tuber. These can be separated during repotting and sprouted in shallow containers of damp sphagnum moss or perlite in a warm, high-humidity environment. Keep the corms slightly moist but never waterlogged to prevent them rotting before roots establish.
